Bay of Quinte MP Ryan Williams “We Need Life Sentences for Fentanyl Kingpins”

Belleville, ON – Bay of Quinte MP Ryan Williams supports the call for mandatory life sentences on anyone involved in the trafficking, production and distribution of over 40 mg of fentanyl. Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre announced today that as Prime Minister he would crack down on mass fentanyl production and organized crime “superlabs” that have appeared in Canada in the last nine years, producing drugs that are killing Canadians. Conservatives will pass mandatory life sentences, so fentanyl kingpins never get out of jail and 15 years for traffickers caught with between 20mg to 40mg.

Since 2016, 49,000 Canadians have died of opioid overdoses, a 200% increase since 2016.

MP Williams says “I have spoken to local police about the issues they face. The message has been the same – stop the ‘Catch and Release’ of drug dealers. Police need the right tools to deal with the criminals in our Bay of Quinte community. This Liberal-NDP Government passed Bill C-5 and eliminated mandatory jail time for the production and trafficking of hard drugs like fentanyl.”

MP Williams adds “Canada has become a drug-manufacturing hot spot. A Conservative government will reverse this disastrous NDP-Liberal policy to stop the flow of drugs by going after the real cause – the kingpins and organized criminals who produce, traffic, and supply fentanyl.”

MP Williams says “It wasn’t that long ago our community was rocked by an opioid crisis with thirty-six overdoses in 48 hours. We know that over 80 percent of accidental opioid deaths in Canada involve fentanyl. It takes just 2 mg of fentanyl to kill someone. That means just 40mg of fentanyl is enough to kill 20 people. Conservatives will treat mass fentanyl production like mass murder. “
